It’s been two years since I have seen the inside of a gym. Today I was so thrilled to be able to set foot inside the beautiful and super functional gym in our new apartment building. My home workouts have been fine for the duration of the pandemic, it keeps me moving. There is something so exhilarating about lifting weights in a gym! I missed it and I know my body did to. I’m sure you’ll agree that these past two years have proven to us that lifting weights on a regular basis defines our muscles and shapes our bodies differently than other types of exercise. There is a science to strength training and our bodies adapt. Our job is to respond by lifting heavier weight over time to continue to get stronger and create the musculature that we desire.
Truthfully my body has not been as strong or as functional as it was pre-pandemic but I’m doing my best. I also know that when I step foot inside the gym of my new apartment and get my groove back I will start to see results. After my first workout yesterday it felt like home, floating into a peaceful place where I can workout and no be interrupted by the outside world.
I think the important message here is that our lives can be challenged, interrupted, and can change in a moment, it happens all the time. We need to remember to be kind to ourselves, to do what feels best. Finding different activities like walking, riding bikes or dancing are all ways we can move our bodies. Our bodies are meant to move. If we don’t use it we lose it!
I know I did the best I could with what I had available to me over the past two years. I also did my best to be consistent, but for me, the inside of a gym is my happy place and I’m so ready to get back into the gym!
